The Lingerie Drawer Edit: 7 Pieces Worth Owning
A lingerie drawer can become surprisingly chaotic.
A few impulse buys. A set you loved but never wear. Something beautiful that turns out to be uncomfortable. Everyday basics pushed underneath pieces you had completely forgotten about.
At some point, more stops being better.
I would rather have a smaller collection of pieces that fit well, feel good and actually earn their place.
So if I were editing a lingerie drawer from scratch, these are the seven pieces I would keep.
1. The black set you can always rely on
Every lingerie drawer deserves one genuinely good black set.
Not because black is the only colour worth wearing, but because it is incredibly versatile.
Black can be minimal, elegant, dramatic or seductive depending on the design. It works beneath darker clothing, it pairs easily with other pieces and it rarely feels dated.
For me, the ideal black set is one you don't have to think about.
You put it on and it simply works.
That might mean a soft lace bralette with matching briefs, a structured underwired set, or something cleaner in mesh or satin.
The exact style matters less than the fact that it feels unmistakably like you.
If your drawer has ten black bras but only one you actually reach for, keep the one.
The rest are taking up space.
2. The comfortable bralette
Comfortable doesn't have to mean boring.
A well-designed bralette is one of the most useful pieces you can own because it covers that space between purely practical underwear and something you actually enjoy wearing.
It is the piece I would choose for slower mornings, working from home, travelling or days when structure is simply not what I want.
Look for soft fabric, supportive straps and a band that stays in place without digging in.
A bralette should feel effortless.
If you forget you're wearing it, that is usually a good sign.
And if it also happens to look beautiful underneath an open shirt or loose knit, even better.
3. A smooth everyday bra
Not every outfit wants lace.
Sometimes you need something that disappears.
A smooth, simple bra earns its place because it works beneath fitted tops, dresses and lighter fabrics where texture would otherwise show through.
This is one of those pieces where fit matters more than decoration.
The band should sit securely. The cups should lie smoothly. The straps shouldn't require constant adjustment.
It may not be the most exciting item in the drawer, but it is often one of the most useful.
And useful pieces make the beautiful ones easier to appreciate.
4. One piece with drama
Everyone needs at least one piece that isn't trying to be practical.
A bodysuit.
A striking corset-inspired design.
A beautifully detailed set.
Something with unusual straps, sheer panels, embroidery or a silhouette you wouldn't wear every day.
This is the piece you buy because you love it.
It doesn't need to justify itself with versatility.
It doesn't need to work underneath every outfit.
It is allowed to exist purely because it makes getting dressed more interesting.
I think every wardrobe needs something like that.
Lingerie included.
5. The bodysuit that leaves the bedroom
A good bodysuit shouldn't be limited to lingerie.
Some of the best ones work perfectly as part of an outfit.
Under a blazer.
With tailored trousers.
With a high-waisted skirt.
Beneath an oversized shirt.
That makes a bodysuit one of the most useful crossover pieces in the drawer.
The key is choosing one with enough structure and coverage to make styling easy.
Black is the obvious starting point, but deep jewel tones can work beautifully too.
If I were choosing just one, I would go for something simple enough to style but interesting enough to stand on its own.
That balance is what makes it worth owning.
6. The piece you wear for yourself
This one doesn't have a strict category.
It could be a silk camisole.
A soft slip.
A lace set.
A beautiful robe.
The point is that it isn't there for an occasion.
It isn't there for somebody else.
It is the piece you wear because it changes how you feel.
There is something quietly luxurious about wearing something beautiful even when nobody else knows it is there.
That doesn't need to be explained or justified.
Sometimes that is the entire reason to own it.
7. A set that works beyond one season
Trends are fun.
But if every piece in your drawer is built around a trend, your collection starts ageing very quickly.
I like having at least one set that feels timeless.
Clean lines.
Good proportions.
Beautiful fabric.
Strong fit.
Something you could wear next month or three years from now and still like just as much.
This doesn't mean safe.
It means considered.
A timeless set can still be bold. It just doesn't rely on novelty to make it interesting.
Those are often the pieces that end up becoming favourites.
What I would remove
Editing a lingerie drawer isn't only about what to add.
It is also about what deserves to leave.
I would be ruthless with anything that:
- no longer fits properly
- constantly needs adjusting
- feels uncomfortable after an hour
- has lost its shape
- has damaged elastic or straps
- looked better online than it does in real life
- hasn't been worn in a very long time
You don't need to keep something simply because you spent money on it.
If you never wear it, the decision has already been made.
The drawer just hasn't caught up yet.
Build slowly
You do not need seven new pieces tomorrow.
The point isn't to create another shopping list.
It is to build a collection with intention.
Start with what you already own.
Pull everything out.
Try things on.
Be honest about what works.
Then look for the gaps.
Maybe you already have three beautiful sets but no comfortable bralette.
Maybe everything in your drawer is practical and nothing feels special.
Maybe you own plenty of lingerie but none of it fits particularly well.
That tells you what to buy next.
A good lingerie drawer shouldn't be the biggest one.
It should be the one where almost everything gets worn.
That is the difference between owning lingerie and having a collection you actually enjoy.
